What & Why Hire a local Location Sound Recordist?

A sound recordist is a person in video, film or television production whom mixes & records sound to cameras or other recording devices. They are often called a sound engineer or production sound mixer or a location sound mixer, and less frequently a sound assistant, sound operator. In male gender they are a sound guy or sound man. The sound recordist is responsible for mixing lavalieres, and a shotgun microphone to camera or an external recorder often synced with time code. This site will not go into the entire reference history, but you can read more by reference links at the bottom of the page.

Hiring a freelance sound recordist is critical even for smaller scale video or television productions, as it’s not easy, (or impossible) to simultaneously adjust audio levels while operating a camera, and doing so will inhibit camera movement when necessary. Any boom operation will also make efficient camera operation impossible so hiring a skilled sound recordist to operate a boom while mixing other sources, paying their rate is better than jeopardizing your entire shoot especially on a mulligan basis, or attempting to fix footage that was overlooked or cut short of full potential. Hire a local experienced sound guy like myself who’s been at the profession since 1990.
