I’m a Colorado native with professional experience in production since 1990’s in video, film as well television production. Tasks of a location sound person

In any city, town, state, country or planet the audio tech (will be referred to as a sound person below) is responsible for mixing audio & recording.

Through a sound mixer (often a mixer/recorder combination)

Often passing the clean audio to a camera or external mixer recorder, which is most often digital. The mixer hardware is designed for ENG or EFP, film & TV audio mixing. Often recording is a portable mixer with 2 channels or more. With cameras minus good audio recording ability, such as DSLR or 35mm film cameras the sound person is critical.

Recording sound DSLR’s have smaller audio pre-amps for signal processing requires sound gear. Film cameras only acquire image onto the motion picture film. Newer film cameras however output time code in modern day so the sound recordist is needed. In film production roles can easily sync up the audio with the right audio equipment including clap slates.

Mirror-less or DSLR cameras often are noisier than larger cameras with better sound recording mechanisms. Resulting in more white noise in the sound recordiing. Hiring a location sound mixer with better gear is ideal with better audio gear recording better sound.
